Sierra Leone Piracy Law

Sierra Leone is a pluralist system which encompasses common law modeled after the British system, local customary law, and Islamic (or Shaira) law. It has been observed that customary law continues to extensively supplement the central government judiciary in cases involving family law, inheritance, and land tenure, especially in rural areas. Sierra Leone does not possess any legislation specifically criminalizing piracy and may only rely upon prosecuting elements of piratical crimes within its territorial waters under its Penal Code.
