Ian Urbina of the New York Times Follows Up on Murder at Sea

Ian Urbina of the New York Times has just released a story that provides further analysis on the victims that appear in the "Murder at Sea" video featured in his series, "The Outlaw Ocean."

That such a violent act can be filmed, but largely ignored by law enforcement officials, demonstrates the degree of impunity with which crimes are committed on the high seas.

OBP strongly supports continuing this investigation until the perpetrators can be brought to justice and believes the following are essential to address the larger issue of lawlessness at sea:

  • There should be 100% reporting of all violent incidents at sea
  • Nations bearing responsibility for the victims, perpetrators or oversight of implicated vessels must claim jurisdiction to investigate and prosecute violent crime on the high seas
  • Seafarers should receive basic training about reporting violent crimes they witness, and how to receive post-incident support
