OBP West Africa

OBP began to investigate the effects of piracy occurring in the Gulf of Guinea region beginning with the “Human Cost of Piracy – 2012” study, released in the summer of 2013, and has continued to expand our coverage of the region in subsequent editions of the State of Piracy report. Similar to OBP’s work in the Horn of Africa, we continue to seek to bring together relevant stakeholders from a variety of sectors, including governments, industry and civil society.

OBP’s work in the Gulf of Guinea has expanded to include providing strategic support to international and regional stakeholders in the implementation of the Yaoundé Code of Conduct, analyzing the particular models of piracy employed in the region, promoting rule of law solutions to maritime security issues, and work on dissecting the root causes of the problem.
